The gap between science and values.
I love science.
More than science, I love nature.
It seems to me, science is humans attempt to explain and categorize nature.
Science changes.
As we do more studies, science deepen our understanding of how nature works.
“science” changes.
I do have a little issue with how we use science.
Science in animal training has shown us the good and the bad of how we treat animals and the effects our actions have on animals.
There is science that focuses on what’s best for animals, however, It seems, most science in animal training is about getting animals to do what “we” want.
That’s fine. If animals make our lives harder, we won’t have them around as pets.
Problem is. The technical language of the science of animal training is a bit confusing. It’s fine if we are scientists or animal behaviorists and the main goal is to get an animal to behave in a specific way.
Why do we want animals to behave in a specific way?
I think, it’s because we want to increase our own level of comfort, improve our lives, make life easier, more in line with our needs.
To increase value. but how exactly?
Do you agree that we have animals to increase some values in our lives?
What values?
What if…
What if…
By defining what we want by having animals, we could move closer to our ultimate goal? You know, it order to get what we want, it’s helpful to know what we want.
What if…
By refraining the way, we think about animal training could improve the life of the animal, and our own lives?
What if…
We could recognize, when we have what we want?
What if…
By intentionally using words that describe our goal, our brain would begin to view things in a way that would make us more likely achieve it
What if… our lives could improve, simply by training our animals in a way that mimics what we want as human beings?
We all have different goals and we all have the same goals.
My goal?
Peace.
I’ve been working on this perspective in dog training during my entire carrier. This week, I ask ChatGPT for input to see if my view was valid or just neive, crazy, utopian, all of those words people use to stop positive change in it’s tracks.
